This final project was a bit of a sentimental journey for me. I had wanted to do something fun for the last project but felt drawn to working on a more personal project as part of the journey I started with the collage project earlier this semester and the documentary film I did last semester. The immigrant experiences of my grandfather and my mother have been on mind in the past couple of months and I enjoyed working with their images on the collage project. So, it was a natural next step to base my final project on the old photos and video that I had. I was also inspired by the generative art project to explore a video remix of all of these things. I visualized a brief video connecting the historical events that compelled my grandfather and my mother to leave China. I titled the piece “A New Home” because they have made this country their home.

The first pass became more documentary than remix because I had more clips with speaking than music in the video. I started over again and edited out much of the spoken audio, replacing it with a mix of old Chinese music with a newer, more contemporary sound.  I also wanted to capture the flow of the generative art project, so I started editing until I had a better mix of music, video and still images.

I’m not sure that I’ve accomplished everything that I wanted with this project but I like where it is now. Here is the link to my video.

So, there it is, my final video.

The entire project is made entirely from commercial clips, Originally wanted to make something that was alright to listen to, unfortunately this isn’t it.  In the sense that the project for me was an experimentation where at many points I just let things play out to see how they sound, and how that pertains to remix in the sense of just seeing where things landed in the editor.  In that sense it was a success I guess, however it’s not what I really wanted or was aiming for, but in the end it’s what I got.  A mash of sounds and video clips playing to a monotonous beat also made from commercial clips, hopefully however it’ll be fun to look at.

So for this class I suppose i can muster some less brief than the statement given on my site.
So, the visual aspects. The images were pulled from various websites and then a few cut out of 125 by 125 pixels were selected, like a real collage there is no over lap in the cut outs, so each area is only used once. the only exceptions to this is the blank “image20″ that holds nothing but transparency Then the images were ordered within each cell using a random number generator given the paramter of integers greater than zero and less than 21.  The speed of each transition is a controlled variable but in a pattern. Imagine something dropped in water, and how the ripples grow. That is how the speed was a assigned, the slowest changing tiles are in the middle, moving towards the faster moving ones at the corners.  The transitional speed of the images is very slow, allowing the images to flow from one to another in a very ‘fluid’ manner.

The audio was probably my favorite part, and definitely spent the longest on. (This project could have been posted on saturday as complete but i ended up going on a crazy binge trying to make this peice sound the way I imagined it)
So I kept with the idea that the sounds needed to be things I owned in a sense, but I expanded it to include things not on my mcomputer music I had written and composed was recorded so that it could be included in this. but in the end, regardless of the elements origin  it got- REMIXED. Cut up, diced up, played back wards, filtered, re tuned. I had at the audio, tearing it down and building it back up. The end result… beautiful.

Thank you all for making this such a fun and creative semester, I enjoyed learning with you and exploring new concepts and ideas.
I know it was easily my favorite class this whole semester.

Hello all! My name is Michael Chaudoin and my primary focus for this project was comedy. I wasn’t focused on creating a piece that demonstrated some level of technical excellence, as much as I was focused on just letting go. I allowed for my creativity to flow and this is what I got. Then Will decided to make the assignment a concentrated one. Which was great, because I had to find something that spoke to me… something that meant something… something that had the blood of Adonis.

I needed something that was winning.

And, since this assignment was started ages ago, but I’m just now turning it in, I present to you my original work, which is also a historical artifact considering how this piece’s subject matter, well, came and went.

The final project for Matt Schwartz for Remix Culture.  I change a couple of things, added a couple of scenes, and just all around had some fun with it.

And at the end of Act 2 I really think that it comes into its own.
